Civil War 2012: How Oregon & OSU Fans Perceive Each Other

Steve Dykes

On the eve of the Civil War, how do Oregon Ducks and Oregon State fans perceive one another?

How would you describe the Civil War rivalry, and what is your relationship with your Beaver brothers?

Ricky Widmer, Autzen Zoo: Honestly, I see the Oregon-OSU rivalry like most rivalries in college sports. Both teams are going to come to play and it will always be a fight to the "death." It's always a good game when to inter-state teams battle it out.

Nathan Roholt. FishDuck: The term "Beaver brothers" is literal for me, my brother is a student there. The best comparison would be Michigan-Michigan State. Michigan State will tell you their rival is Michigan, but Michigan would say Ohio State. Oregon views Oregon State as a rival for historical purposes, but Oregon's main rival has always been Washington. Oregon fans put more focus now on USC, or even the SEC, than either of those rivalries. Two years ago, Cliff Harris called OSU "little brother" (he was dead-on), which might be why the majority of Oregon State fans HATE Oregon. OSU fans find a Duck loss more satisfying than a Beaver win, evidenced by Reser Stadium being at its loudest when the Stanford-Oregon score was announced, rather than the touchdown scored moments later.

How would you describe the Civil War rivalry, and what is your relationship with your Duck brothers?

Jon (j_irwin1704), Northwest Sports Beat: Outside of the Trail Blazers, UO and OSU are all Oregon really has for major sports teams. That's why the Civil War rivalry is so big in the state. I think it's a fun and peaceful rivalry, but there are always those that can take it too seriously.

I have a lot of great friends who went to UO, and we get along pretty peacefully. Years like these make it the hardest, because both teams are playing really well. I can't imagine the tension if both teams had made it this far undefeated.

Andy (AndyPanda), Building The Dam:
It's the one thing that gets people who won't bother with going to a Duck or Beaver game even when they are rolling to not only pay attention, but possibly even wear something Orange or Green. It's also the one thing that turns a year of bad jokes into a week of cheap shots.

Most of the Duck fans I talk to are of the type that say "I root for you guys every other week." But that's because I don't talk to the others.
