Cal had a long list of official visitors this weekend with several of them being previously committed receivers. They just added another one now that Louisiana wide receiver Brandon Singleton has committed today to the Bears.
The former Georgia Tech commit had several other offers, including a recent one from Arkansas. What kind of player are the Bears getting in Singleton?
Brandon Singleton - 3 star wide receiver
Singleton is a smooth, but not explosive, athlete that runs very well. He's a long strider, but shows solid lateral agility. He has good height and will use his long arms to go up and snatch the football, but he has an extremely slim build. He faced mostly off coverage in high school and I worry about him versus bigger corners that can press him at the line. He needs to add weight and get stronger once he arrives on campus at Cal.
The majority of the time he is a natural hands catcher who does a nice job of adjusting to the football when it's in the air. He's also a solid route runner that knows how to open cornerbacks up with the threat over the top and will work his way back to the football. It's a crucial for him that he does this already because he doesn't have the explosive ability out of his breaks to just beat too many quicker corners with his athleticism. He's not going to get separation on athletic ability alone.
He flashes the ability to make people miss after the catch and he shows it in the return game as well. He doesn't have the strength to break arm tackles though.
That lack of strength doesn't equate to a lack of effort as a blocker in the run game. He works hard to sustain blocks and that is something that can help him see the field early in his career.
Singleton may need some time to physically develop, but he has the chance to be a very productive player in the Bear Raid over the course of his career.
