We’re back after a crazy week one. Jack Follman is here for your general game rankings and Jeremy Baird has advice for his fellow dads out there when it comes to watching this week’s Pac-12 action.
Game of the Week - BYU at Utah - 4:30 pm FOX
This is one of the better games in the nation on a really weak second week of action as everyone recovers from an awesome opening week. Really glad to see this rivalry reignited in what should be a very even match-up. Don’t be surprised if this is another low-scoring, but tight nailbiter like BYU’s opener against Arizona.
2. Washington State at Boise State - 7:15 pm ESPN2
Sadly, this one lost some luster with the Cougars opening up with a loss to Eastern Washington, but don’t write it off yet. The Cougars will be coming out hot to try and put another FCS opening loss behind them and prove they are still a contender in the North. Plus, Boise State’s starting quarterback is the relative of Cougar great Mark Rypien so both sides will assuredly be trying to prove something in a nice little Northwest matchup.
3. Texas Tech at Arizona State - 7 pm FOX Sports 1
Don’t sleep on this one. It’s both teams’ marquee non-conference game, they are evenly matched, and both really need it to show they are going to be contenders in their conference and to give themselves better chances at bowl games. A fun one at night in the desert where crazy things always seem to happen.
4. Cal at San Diego State - 7:30 pm CBS Sports Network
Another underrated gem. Cal looks to still have a prolific offense, but they get a major test from San Diego State, who is one of the best mid majors in college football this year. I expect a back-and-forth affair between two dynamic offenses with both teams really needing the win in an after dark game in San Diego.
5. Virginia at Oregon - 7:30 pm ESPN
This one looks like a snoozer after Virginia dropped their opener against an FCS opponent, but sometimes that just motivates teams to come out better the next week and Oregon is far from unbeatable. The Ducks’ defense is questionable enough to where Virginia can make this a game if they can score enough.
6. Utah State at USC - 11 am Pac-12 Networks
This has become a mandatory bounce back game for the Trojans. Utah State isn’t as good as they were in recent seasons, but they are fully capable of giving the Trojans a game if they can’t shake off their hangover from Alabama.
7. UNLV at UCLA - 5 pm Pac-12 Networks
The other game where the LA school has to avoid the hangover from a tough loss in Texas.
8. Grambling State at Arizona - 7:45 pm Pac-12 Networks
Grambling State isn’t Eastern Washington, but the Wildcats will have to push past a tough loss here and avoid an upset which isn’t impossible.
9. Idaho State at Colorado - 2:30 pm Pac-12 Networks
Let’s see if the Buffs can follow up that stellar domination of Colorado State with a domination of a bad FCS opponent. Easier said than done.
10. Idaho at Washington - 2 pm Pac-12 Networks
Idaho is one of the worst teams in FBS, but hey, they are still FBS, and the Huskies could be do for a zombie game they don’t take serious and it ends up being at least a little interesting.
And Now here is Jeremy Baird for the dad’s take.
Dad’s Overview: Week 2 stinks so don’t waste valuable family time watching Washington-Idaho. Instead view Week 2 as an opportunity to check off some honey-do tasks. The silver-lining is that 3 of the top 4 games this week are all after bedtime.
Utah State @ USC: Chuckie Keeton ain’t walking through that door. Take the kids to the playground.
Idaho @ UDub: Build that bench for the patio.
Idaho State @ Colorado: Puzzle time!
BYU @ Utah: Watchable game but the 4:30 time slot is tough. Building blocks are an excellent activity that can be done in front of the TV.
UNLV @ UCLA: Monitor UCLA fan’s frustration on twitter.
Texas Tech @ Arizona State: Get the kids to bed and order diner. It’s doubtful that either team is good, but you’ll want to check out the 2nd half.
Wazzu @ Boise: Crack that well deserved beer and enjoy the blue turf. Wazzu has a lot to prove.
Cal @ SDSU: While a less aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, Donnel Pumphrey gashing the Bear’s D could be a thing of beauty.
UVA @ Oregon: It’s fine to watch the first half, but don’t ruin your Sunday staying up for this one.
Grambling State @ Arizona: Seek help if you find yourself watching this game.
