Utah football recruiting: scouting take on wide receiver Alfred Smith

Alfred Smith was committed to Utah. Then Arizona State. Now it looks like he finally settled on Utah

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Usually when a recruit de-commits from a school and chooses another school, there isn't a chance for the original school to get back into that player's recruitment. But today's recruiting is crazier than ever so, even though it's uncommon, it's not all together shocking that Alfred Smith would commit to Utah, flip to Arizona State, then flip back to Utah. Because, ya know, #crootin.

Now that it looks like he'll officially be a Ute in a couple of days, what kind of player are the Utes getting in Alfred Smith?

Alfred Smith - 3 star wide receiver

Smith is a very good return man that not only shows good speed, but great lateral agility. When you combine that with outstanding balance after contact, it makes him a threat to gain big yards on every return.

Those same physical skills make him great after the catch as well. It's rare for him to go down on first contact, He fights to keep his feet and break tackles. His acceleration is also something that is an asset in this area and also in creating separation with his routes. He's not the most refined route runner and if he improves in that area, his athleticism is going to shine even more.

One issue with Smith is that he too often lets the football get to his body instead of snatching it with his hands. Drops could be an issue if he doesn't work on this.

He's perfectly suited to play in the slot for the Utes and should compete for playing time in the return game early in his career.
