It's a strange year in the Pac-12. No one knows who is going to win the conference with any certainty. The football odds reflect that. Here are the odds that bookmaker TopBet lays out for each of the Pac-12 teams for winning the conference and the playoff.
Washington Huskies: +275 to win Pac-12, +3000 to win playoff. Vegas is buying into the hype surrounding the Dawg Pound. Washington is bringing back an elite defense and one of the best running backs in college football, which is usually a formula for victory in the Pac-12.
Stanford Cardinal: +300 to win Pac-12, +3500 to win playoff. Stanford might have been picked to win the Pac-12 by the media, but the Cardinal are slightly behind Washington in terms of odds. Stanford is a pretty solid bet.
UCLA Bruins, +400 to win Pac-12, +5000 to win playoff. UCLA might be tied for the third best Pac-12 title odds, but they sharply veer downward to win the playoff. The Bruins are definitely built to win a wide open conference, but they might not have the strength to go deeper than that.
USC Trojans, +400 to win Pac-12, +2200 to win playoff. The respect for USC remains strong. Despite having the fourth best odds to win the Pac-12, USC has the best odds to win the playoff. The Trojans do probably have the best talent to win two playoff games against elite squads though, so that is probably the biggest factor in these odds calculus.
Oregon Ducks, +750 to win Pac-12, +4000 to win playoff. 7.5 to 1 odds to pick Oregon seems like your best longshot bet. Oregon hosts Stanford and can determine their Pac-12 destiny based on the result of that contest, and the Ducks remain the deadliest offense in the conference if not the nation.
Washington St. Cougars, +800 to win Pac-12, +12500 to win playoff. Washington State is definitely lingering as a clear and present threat. The Cougars can score with the best of them, and their defense is much improved.
Utah Utes, +1000 to win Pac-12, +8000 to win playoff. Utah is probably a longshot to win the conference--their offense is going an entire overhaul--but if UCLA and USC aren't on their game the Utes could potentially slip through. Their defense is that good.
Arizona St. Sun Devils, +2000 to win Pac-12, +25000 to win playoff.
Arizona Wildcats, +2500 to win Pac-12, +25000 to win playoff.
The rivals from Arizona are in a transition year. There will be so many new playmakers on each side. Still, if you're not sold on USC or UCLA, this is a potentially good bet to make. Neither Arizona or Arizona State are likely to win a playoff, but they have the offenses that could sneak up and steal the South.
California Golden Bears, +5000 to win Pac-12, +50000 to win playoff. Cal is a longshot to win the Pac-12 for a reason. They've lost their number one draft pick at quarterback and almost the entire pass game, which was the number one strength of this team. It'd be hard pressed to see them not taking a step back.
Colorado Buffaloes, +8000 to win Pac-12, +50000 to win playoff. Colorado is just hoping to make a bowl game. Don't expect them to flip the switch and win the conference.
Oregon St. Beavers, +10000 to win Pac-12, no playoff odds listed. Rebuilding year. Stay away.
