Utah Football: Utes Fans Experience Five Stages Of Grief After Utah State Upset

Presswire

A more thorough recap of the debacle in Logan is coming later this weekend. For now, let's take a journey through the viewpoint of a Utah fan as they felt their utter doom.

Utah fans werea pretty confident bunch going into this one. Despite a pretty thorough pummeling of what has to be the fifth or sixth best team in Utah, Utah State was not impressive enough to meet a Utah team. Despite warning signs that all of us should have noted (like Utah's struggles to run against Northern Colorado or Utah's struggles to pass against Northern Colorado). Honestly, Utah fans were probably in the right frame of mind. It was hard to see how an upset could happen.

It unfortunately didn't turn out so well. Witness a fanbase meltdown with the five stages all interspersed on the Block U (Utah's SB Nation site) gamethread. WARNING: Strong language.

Denial: After Utah State returned a punt block for a touchdown.

Seriously, where is our team?!!!

After Utah missed an opportunity, twice.

How did we not sack him AND not get the fumble?

Then it happened again.

Can't we recover a stupid fumble?

Or catch a break?

This is the ultimate denial post at halftime.

We are so lucky to only be down by 13 right now.

Utah State isn’t that good, we should be killing this team!

I was as surprised as you are, Utah fan. But I was in denial, as I imagine most of Ute Nation was feeling at this point. Where was the power, the defense, the anything? The Pac-12 sleeper was looking more sleepy by the minute.

Anger: Which of course led to the quarterback getting roasted. Anger generally involved Jordan Wynn doing things.

I can throw a better ball... than Wynn

If Wynn wasn't such a chicken shit

He would have stepped up into the pocket… fkn Wynn

Does Wynn have the charisma to pull this game out?

…does he even believe in himself anymore? I don’t think we should send him out for the start of the 2nd Q.

Wynn spotting

That last comment is the best. The charisma? He's going to method act his way to completing a pass on the move?

I guess if I threw a football like it needed to be an overhead smash, I'd get called names too.

Bargaining: Usually involves people bargaining for someone other than Jordan Wynn.

We need a QB with some balls

I honestly wouldn't care if they were female if the could take a hit and throw a straight pass.

Also, Gallows humor! Literally.

And then when he did get injured? Bargaining with your soul.

I am a bastard for being happy about this.

join the club.

Depression: Usually involves comparing this game to baseline rates of awful.

Oh Dear God. Once you hit Chevy Chase, you know you're in dangerous territory.

Acceptance: Time to move onto the next one.

I don't see it.

Was this game horrifying? Completely. Am I sick to my stomach and still looking for every excuse possible? Yeah. Do I think we go one and five? Heck no. I didn’t catch a little bit of the third and start of fourth, but I still believe in this team. Hays is definately a better Hays than last year. I hate the idea of him starting, but he’s a heck of a lot better than Wynn. JWIV is still incredible. Honestly the only (big) problem is O-Line and a question mark at QB. No 12-0 or 11-1 this year, but playing the underdog card and fighting could get this team to a hard-earned 9-3. I will remain optimistic and see what happens next week.

That's the life of a college football fan. Grief comes and it goes, but there's usually another game to live and die by the week thereafter. Get angry, get crazy, get sad, get back at it next week.
